「Because…」「For example, last week…」「The first time I…」

- Should college be free?

NadiaとChrisが「The four-day workweek」を取り上げます。
The four-day workweek:
C1- Chris
Would a four-day week actually work in your industry, or is it one of those ideas that only sounds good on paper?
- Nadia
In consulting? Honestly, I doubt it. Clients don’t stop calling on Fridays, so the fifth day would just get squeezed into the other four.
- Chris
That’s the usual objection, but the companies that have tried it mostly say people cut meetings first, not output.
- Nadia
Meetings, sure. But my meetings are with clients, and I can’t exactly tell them we’ve decided to be less available.
- Chris
Fair. So it depends less on the company and more on who you answer to.
- Nadia
Right. If the whole market moved at once, I’d take it in a heartbeat. As the only firm doing it, we’d lose accounts.
- Chris
Would you take a small pay cut if the whole industry shifted?
- Nadia
Probably, yes. A day a week is worth more to me than five percent. What about you, would engineering survive it?
- Chris
We’d survive it easily. The real question is whether we’d ship less, and I suspect we would, at least for the first few months.
- Nadia
So you’re for it in principle and nervous about it in practice. That sounds like most people I’ve asked.
|---|---|---|
| 初対面の雑談(スモールトーク) | Next weekend (A2), Your neighborhood (A2), Music and shows (A2), What to watch next (B1) | 相手をよく知るまで、給料、健康、政治、宗教は避けます。 |
| 教室の外で会う大人同士 | Friendship as an adult (B1), Small luxuries (B1), A skill in one month (B1), Advice that turned out wrong (C1) | 大人の学習者は、教訓のある話題より、エピソードのある話題で最も伸びます。 |
| 旅行や社交の場 | A trip you took (A2), Getting around your city (A2), Tourist or traveler (B1), When travel goes wrong (B1) | 旅の話はどのレベルでも機能します。 |
| 職場の雑談 | A normal weekday (A2), Your job in plain words (B1), Remote work or the office (B1) | 会議、進捗報告、職場での反対意見はビジネス英会話ガイドを使ってください。 |
| 意見を聞く質問 | News and where you get it (B1), Social media (B1), Talent versus luck (C1), Honesty and kindness (C1) | 「but」を足す前に、立場と理由を一つ言います。 |
| ディベート練習 | Limits on tourism (C1), Should college be free? (C1), Should schools ban phones?
|---|---|
| Do you like your job? | What do you like about your job, and what would you change? |
| Did you have a good weekend? | What did you end up doing this weekend? |
| Is your city big? | What is your city like for someone who has never been there? |
| Do you cook? | What do you make when you have no time? |
| Was the trip good? | What was the best moment of the trip, and what went wrong? |
「I take the bus, it takes forty minutes」と言われたら、拾う詳細はforty minutesです。「What do you do for forty minutes?」。
- なぜ?「Why the bus and not the train?」
- その後どうなった?「So what did you do when the bus didn’t come?」
- 何と比べて?「Is that longer than in your last city?」
- 何を変えたい?「If you could fix one thing about your commute, what would it be?」
A: I started running this year.
B: How did that start?
A: A friend signed me up for a race.
B: And did you finish it?
A: Barely. But I signed up for the next one.
同じ話題を過去(「What was it like before?」)や未来(「Do you think that will change?」)
「What about you?」
「Is it the same where you grew up?」
「That reminds me of something」や「On a different note」は一つの話題をきれいに閉じます。
|---|---|---|
| A1〜A2 | 答える、詳細を一つ足す、聞き返す | 「I usually…」「It is…」「What about you?」 |
| B1〜B2 | 答える、理由を言う、例を足す、聞き返す | 「…, because…」「For example, last week…」「How about you?」 |
| C1〜C2 | 立場、限定、帰結、反論の誘い | 「I’d say…, but only when…」「The part people miss is…」「Push back if you see it differently.」 |
A1〜A2:「What did you have for breakfast today?」
Eggs.
I had eggs and toast. I usually eat at home before work, because the café near my office is expensive. What about you?
B1〜B2:「Do you work better at home or in an office?」
At home.
At home, mostly, because I can start early and nobody interrupts me before ten. Last week I finished a report in two mornings that would have taken the whole week in the office. I do miss lunch with the team, though. Where do you get more done?
C1〜C2:「Should cities cap the number of tourists?」
Probably.
I’d cap it, but only where residents are actually being priced out, not everywhere that gets crowded. A cap in Venice protects a shrinking population; a cap in a city of five million just creates a line. The consequence people underestimate is where the visitors go instead, usually the next town over, which is even less prepared. I can see the argument that caps punish the wrong people, so push back if you see it differently.
下のモデル回答は「Habits that did not stick」をB1〜B2の型で答えたもの。
モデル回答:「Habits that did not stick」
B1〜B2A habit I tried to build this year was running before work. It started well: I ran three mornings a week for almost a month, and I felt better during the day. Then the weather turned, I skipped one week, and the whole routine fell apart.
Looking back, the problem was not motivation. It was the plan. I put running at six in the morning, which was the one hour I had never protected before, so when something else came up, running was the first thing to go.
The habit that survived is different. I walk to the office instead of taking the bus, which adds twenty minutes of exercise without a separate slot in my calendar. So my rule now is simple: attach a new habit to something I already do, instead of adding a new block of time. Has anything like that worked for you?

「食べ物について話しましょう」では止まりますが、「What did you have for breakfast today?」
「I take the bus, it takes forty minutes」からは、新しい話題なしで「What do you do for forty minutes?」 ネタが尽きたら「What about you?」
「Do you like your job?」は会話を終わらせ、「What do you like about your job?」
