Practice answering out loud. Reading silently trains nothing — say your answer, add one reason and one example, and aim for 30–60 seconds before you take the next question.

How to use the question generator

The generator is a prompt machine — the practice happens when you answer. Three ways to use it:

  • Solo practice. Read the question, then answer out loud for 30–60 seconds. Talking to an empty room feels odd for about two minutes, then it becomes the cheapest speaking practice there is. Record yourself once a week to hear the difference.
  • With a partner or a class. Take turns: one person answers, the other asks one follow-up before moving on. The follow-up is where real conversation skill is built. Teachers can use the copy button to drop questions into a lesson plan or a shared chat.
  • With an AI tutor. If you want an answer back — plus corrections — take the question into a voice conversation. Fluently’s AI tutor responds, asks follow-up questions, and after each answer shows how a native speaker would have phrased the same thought.

Pick questions that match your level

Easy questions cover everyday topics — daily routine, food, hobbies — and work as beginner English conversation practice from roughly A2. Medium questions ask you to describe, compare and explain, around B1–B2. Hard questions are opinion and discussion prompts where you defend a position, closer to C1. Not sure where you stand? Take the free English level test first, then practise one level below your result: fluency grows fastest when the language is slightly easier than your maximum.

How to give longer answers

The most common problem isn’t vocabulary — it’s one-sentence answers. “Do you like travelling?” — “Yes.” Conversation over. Use a four-step structure instead:

  1. Answer the question directly in your first sentence.
  2. Reason: add “because…” and give one honest reason.
  3. Example: tell a fifteen-second story from your own life.
  4. Turn: hand the conversation back — “What about you?”

Aim for 30–60 seconds per answer. Freezing mid-sentence is normal — it means you’re training production, not just recognition. Regular English speaking practice is what closes that gap; the questions are just the fuel.

Why random questions beat prepared lists

With a prepared list of English conversation topics, you rehearse; with random questions for English conversation, you improvise. A question you didn’t choose forces you to think in English under mild pressure — which is exactly what a real conversation demands. That’s also why the interview warm-up set is worth shuffling: after a few random rounds, your answers stop sounding memorised.

For workplace situations — meetings, small talk with colleagues, disagreeing politely — the questions here are a starting point; our guide to business English conversation covers the phrases and tactics in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is this English conversation question generator free?

Yes. All 142 questions, every topic and level, with no account and no download — the generator runs in your browser. The Fluently app itself, an AI tutor for voice practice on iOS and Android, is free to download, with a subscription for regular practice.

How do I practise these questions alone?

Answer out loud, not in your head — production and recognition are different skills. Give each question 30–60 seconds, record yourself occasionally, and repeat weak answers a day later. If you want feedback on what you said, an AI tutor can respond, ask follow-ups, and correct your pronunciation and grammar after each answer.

How many questions a day should I practise?

Three to five questions answered properly beat twenty skimmed. A full answer — position, reason, example — takes about a minute, so a focused session is under ten minutes. Daily short sessions build fluency faster than one long session a week.

Can teachers use these questions in class?

Yes — as warm-ups, pair-work prompts or discussion openers. Filter by topic and level for your group, use the copy button to collect a set, and ask students for one follow-up question per answer to keep the exchange going.
