Portuguese has two verbs for “to be”. Ser is for what someone is by nature; a passing state like being tired takes estar, so eu estou cansado.

Get feedback as you speak

The tutor corrects you inside the conversation, not at the end of a lesson. A grammar slip or a phrase copied word for word from English gets a short correction card with a more natural way to say it; the explanation is in Portuguese, with a translate button for your own language.

Ter um bom tempo copies the English “have a good time” word for word, and Brazilians don’t say it. To say you enjoyed yourself, use divertir-se: eu me diverti.

How do I learn Portuguese with AI in Fluently?

Install the app, choose Portuguese as the language you are learning and set your own language, then start talking. Each session is a spoken conversation in Brazilian Portuguese: the tutor answers, asks follow-up questions on the topic you bring and shows a correction card when a sentence has a grammar slip or sounds unnatural.

Can I start as a beginner?

Yes, if you know a few basic phrases. The tutor simplifies its Portuguese when you struggle, and you can say a missing word in your own language. Practice is spoken from the first session, so learners with no Portuguese at all may find the first conversations demanding.

What feedback will I receive?

Correction cards for grammar (ser and estar, verb endings, gender and agreement, prepositions) and for phrases a Brazilian would say differently, each with a short explanation in Portuguese and a translate button. The tutor also suggests words to use, and the session notes keep the corrections for later. The app does not score Portuguese pronunciation.

Can I try Fluently before subscribing?

Do I need to download the app?

Which Portuguese does the AI tutor speak?

Brazilian Portuguese. Fluently works as a Brazilian Portuguese AI tutor: it speaks, answers and corrects you in the Brazilian variety, and there is no setting to switch to European Portuguese. The two varieties differ in pronunciation, in how people address each other and in some everyday words, such as ônibus in Brazil and autocarro in Portugal for “bus”.
