Piacere works like “to be pleasing to”: the thing you like is the subject. Mi piace cucinare is literally “cooking is pleasing to me.”

Get feedback as you speak

The tutor corrects you inside the conversation, not at the end of a lesson. When an article, a preposition or a verb form slips, or a phrase sounds translated from English, a short correction card appears while you keep talking; the explanation is in Italian, with a translate button for your own language.

Italian possessives normally take the article: la mia macchina, il mio lavoro. Singular family words are the exception, as in mia sorella or mio padre.

Start at your level

When you get stuck, the tutor offers ways to start a sentence and words to link your ideas, and you can say a missing word in your own language. Conversations get longer as you manage more.

How do I learn Italian with Fluently’s AI tutor?

Install the app, choose Italian as the language you are learning and set your own language, then start talking. Each session is a spoken conversation in Italian about whatever you bring, from a trip to your family history: the tutor answers, asks follow-up questions and shows a correction card when a sentence has a grammar slip or sounds unnatural.

Can I start learning Italian as a beginner?

Yes, if you know a few basic phrases. The level check at the start estimates your level, and when you get stuck the tutor simplifies its Italian, suggests ways to start a sentence and lets you say a missing word in your own language. Practice is spoken from the first session, so learners with no Italian at all may find the first conversations demanding.

What feedback will I get on my Italian?

Correction cards for grammar (verb forms, articles and agreement, prepositions) and for phrasing a native speaker would say differently, plus vocabulary suggestions. Each card has a short explanation in Italian and a translate button, and the session notes keep the corrections for later. Pronunciation is not scored for Italian: there is no pronunciation feedback during the call, and the app’s pronunciation drills do not cover Italian.

Can I try Fluently before subscribing?

Installing the app and the level check at the start are free. Conversations with the tutor are part of a Fluently subscription; when a trial is available, the app shows it before you pay.

Do I need to download the app?

Yes. Italian practice with the AI tutor happens in the Fluently app for iPhone and Android. Use the App Store or Google Play links on this page to install it.

Does the tutor speak an Italian dialect?

No. The tutor speaks standard Italian as used in Italy, and there is no setting for a regional dialect such as Sicilian or Neapolitan. You can still talk about your family and the places they come from; the conversation itself stays in standard Italian.
