Choose ELSA Speak if pronunciation is your main problem; choose Fluently if you can build sentences but freeze in real conversation. ELSA scores your speech sound by sound and drills the sounds you miss. Fluently (also searched as Fluently AI) runs spoken conversations with an AI tutor and gives feedback on pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary and grammar. On the US App Store, ELSA’s monthly plan costs $19.99 and Fluently’s $24.99 (checked October 2026).

Which is better for pronunciation, ELSA Speak or Fluently?

ELSA Speak is the better tool for pronunciation. ELSA analyses each word sound by sound and shows which sounds need work; its own blog says the app helps you master all 44 English sounds and gives feedback on word stress, intonation and mouth position (elsaspeak.com, July 2026). Users in an r/EnglishLearning thread from March 2024 describe problem sounds highlighted in orange or red, with a phonetic transcription under the word and more detail when you tap a red sound.

You can also choose the accent you practise against: American, British or Australian, according to ELSA’s pricing page. For longer speech, the Speech Analyzer scores five areas: pronunciation, intonation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary. ELSA’s April 2026 App Store release notes say the in-app version maps your score to IELTS, TOEFL, CEFR and TOEIC levels. Treat that as a practice signal, not an official result.

Fluently gives pronunciation feedback too, but as part of a conversation: the tutor corrects you in real time, and the feedback covers pronunciation next to fluency, vocabulary and grammar. Fluently’s store listings describe conversation practice with corrections, not drills for single sounds. If one or two sounds make people ask you to repeat yourself, start with ELSA and add free pronunciation practice exercises or our list of difficult words to pronounce.

Which is better for conversation practice?

Fluently is the more conversation-first app, though ELSA now covers conversation too. Fluently is built around spoken sessions with a personal AI tutor: you talk about topics you enjoy, get corrections in real time and follow a personalised plan, as its App Store listing puts it. The same listing sums up the approach as “Learn through speaking, not endless grammar drills.”

ELSA Speak now offers conversation as well: AI role-plays and open-ended dialogues on ELSA AI, plus AI coaches for meetings, interviews, presentations and even dating, as listed on the ELSA home page. One plan detail matters: on ELSA’s US pricing page, unlimited role-plays on ELSA AI come with Premium, not with the cheaper Pro plan.

So the real difference is where each app starts. ELSA starts from your sounds and lessons and adds dialogue. Fluently starts from the dialogue and gives feedback on what you said. If you blank when someone asks a question, more conversation time helps more than more drills; for habits that help between sessions, see how to improve your English speaking.

Which is better for job interviews and English at work?

For work English, ELSA has the wider set of named tools. Its home page lists Workplace, Interview, Meeting and Presentation coaches, and the ELSA Professional plan ($159.99 a year in ELSA’s US web shop, checked October 2026) adds unlimited Interview Coach, Presentation Coach and Speech Analyzer. ELSA’s site also describes a Meeting Companion that joins Zoom or Google Meet calls and gives you private feedback on your speaking afterwards.

Fluently’s listing names interviews and meetings among the situations it prepares you for, and the practice happens as open conversation with the AI tutor. Fluently also has a free mock interview in the browser with no account: pick screening, behavioral or job-specific questions, answer 5 questions with a follow-up, and see your answer length, pace in words per minute and filler words. It does not grade what you say, so prepare the content with our guide to English for job interviews.

Which app is better for beginners?

ELSA Speak is easier for beginners. Its lessons are designed like games and follow a personalised path, and explanations can appear in your native language, which helps while English instructions are still hard to follow (ELSA pricing page, checked October 2026). Open conversation, the core of Fluently, gets easier once you can put a few simple sentences together. Beginners who want to speak from day one can start with our English conversation for beginners guide.

ELSA Speak Pro vs Premium vs Professional: what is the difference?

ELSA Pro is the pronunciation-only plan; ELSA Premium adds unlimited AI role-plays, certificate courses and the web Speech Analyzer; ELSA Professional adds career coaches on top of Premium. This is how ELSA’s US pricing page and web shop showed the plans on 21 October 2026:

PlanPrice (ELSA US website)What it includes
ELSA Pro$89.99 a year; $46.99 for 3 months“Pronunciation coaching only”: the lesson library, advanced feedback and progress tracking. Unlimited ELSA AI role-plays, certificate courses and the web Speech Analyzer are not included
ELSA Premium$99.99 a year (shown at $51 in the web shop sale that day)Everything in Pro, plus unlimited role-plays on ELSA AI, all certificate courses and the web Speech Analyzer
ELSA Professional$159.99 a yearAll Premium content, plus unlimited Interview Coach, Presentation Coach and Speech Analyzer, and new coaches as they launch

At list prices, Premium costs $10 a year more than Pro on the web; at the $51 sale price it cost less than Pro that day. Premium is the plan ELSA marks as recommended.

How much do ELSA Speak and Fluently cost?

Both apps are free to download and sell subscriptions, and both list more than one price for the same billing period. These are the US App Store purchase lists on 21 October 2026:

Billing periodELSA Speak (US App Store)Fluently (US App Store)
WeeklyNot in the list$9.99 and $19.99
Monthly$19.99$24.99
3 months$47.99 (Premium); also $39.99 and $52.00$44.99 and $89.99
1 year$99.99 (Premium); also $71.00, $109.99 and $129.99$89.99 and $179.99
12 months of monthly billing$239.88$299.88
Other purchasesNone listedWorkplace English course, $19.99

Neither store page explains why one billing period appears at several prices or which entry a new subscriber gets, so trust the amount on your own checkout screen. On monthly billing, ELSA is $5 a month cheaper. On yearly billing, it depends on the entry you are offered: ELSA’s 1-year entries run from $71.00 to $129.99 (and $51 in the web sale that day), Fluently’s from $89.99 to $179.99.

Looking for an ELSA Speak lifetime plan or discount? We did not find a lifetime plan on ELSA’s US pricing page, web shop or App Store purchase list in October 2026, although some older App Store reviews mention one. ELSA does run sales, like the $51 Premium offer above, so check the web shop before paying full price. If you only need a few months, for example before a speaking exam, compare the 3-month options: $46.99 for ELSA Pro on the web, $47.99 for ELSA Premium on the App Store, and $44.99 or $89.99 for Fluently on the App Store.

Billing goes through the store where you subscribed. Fluently’s App Store listing says subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends, and you manage them in your Apple account settings. ELSA’s reply to a 2019 review on its App Store page says that refunds for in-app subscriptions are usually handled by Apple.

Is ELSA Speak free? What each app gives you without paying

ELSA Speak is free to download with a limited free plan; the full app needs a subscription. ELSA offers a 7-day free trial of Premium, and its September 2026 App Store release notes mention “Lesson Limit & Paywall Improvements”, which points to a cap on free lessons. The same listing marks ELSA as containing advertising. Without installing anything, ELSA’s free web test asks you to read sentences aloud and, by ELSA’s description, takes less than 2 minutes.

Fluently is free to download, and its 4-minute speaking test is free; full practice is a subscription after a free trial. Three Fluently tools work free in a browser without the app: the mock interview, the English level test and a conversation question generator.

How to choose before you pay: a free 10-minute check

This check uses only the free parts of both apps and tells you which kind of practice to pay for first.

  1. Read the text below aloud with the trainer, record it and listen back. Mark every word you had to repeat or that sounded wrong.
  2. Take ELSA’s free web test and note what it says about your pronunciation.
  3. Open the free mock interview and answer the first 2 screening questions out loud, without notes. Note your pace, your filler words and how long you paused before each answer.
  4. Compare the two parts. Sounds were the problem: start with ELSA Speak. Answering was the problem: start with conversation practice in Fluently. Both were hard: pair a short sound drill with a longer conversation every day.

Read-aloud check: sounds that often cause repeats

B1–B2

Three weeks ago, I thought my English was fine. Then I joined a team in another country, and every Thursday we had a video call.

My manager often asked me to repeat words. I said “very” and he heard “berry”. I said “think” and he heard “sink”. I said “walk” and he heard “work”.

So I started to read short texts aloud every evening, first slowly, then at a normal speed. Now I record myself, listen back and fix one sound at a time.

Listen to a model reading, then record yourself. You get your speaking pace, the share of words that came through clearly, and the words to repeat.

ELSA Speak and Fluently: pros and cons

ELSA Speak strengths

  • Feedback goes down to single sounds, word stress and intonation, with a choice of American, British or Australian accent.
  • Premium includes exam practice for IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and EIKEN, per the App Store listing.
  • More devices: iPhone, iPad and Android, plus the Speech Analyzer on the web.
  • Beginners get explanations in their native language.

ELSA Speak weak spots

  • Pricing is hard to compare: the US App Store lists 1-year entries at four prices, from $71.00 to $129.99, and the website shows other prices.
  • On ELSA’s US pricing page, the cheaper Pro plan leaves out unlimited AI role-plays and the web Speech Analyzer.
  • Feedback can feel thin at first: in a 2024 Reddit thread, a learner said the colour highlights did not explain what was wrong and that exaggerated intonation seemed to raise the score (another user replied that tapping a red sound shows details).
  • The US App Store listing says the app contains advertising.

Fluently strengths

  • Conversation is the main activity: you practise by talking with an AI tutor, not by tapping answers.
  • Feedback covers pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary and grammar.
  • Free ways in: a 4-minute speaking assessment in the app and a browser mock interview that needs no account.
  • Rated 4.8 on the US App Store and 4.7 on Google Play (checked 21 October 2026).

Fluently weak spots

  • Its store listings describe no sound-by-sound drills, so ELSA is the sharper tool for one stubborn sound.
  • The App Store marks it “Only for iPhone”, so no iPad version is listed.
  • Monthly billing costs more than ELSA’s: $24.99 against $19.99 on the US App Store.
  • It has far fewer ratings than ELSA (about 6,000 against 114,000 on the US App Store), and some reviews on its App Store page report technical problems, such as the AI tutor not responding (a June 2025 review).

Frequently asked questions

Who developed ELSA Speak?

ELSA Speak was co-founded by Vu Van, its CEO, and Dr. Xavier Anguera, a speech technologist, according to ELSA’s About page. Vu Van started the company after moving from Vietnam to study at Stanford, where professors and classmates could not always understand what she was saying. ELSA stands for English Language Speech Assistant.

Can I use ELSA Speak or Fluently on a computer?

The full apps are mobile apps: ELSA for iPhone, iPad and Android, Fluently for iPhone and Android. In a computer browser, ELSA offers its Speech Analyzer (included with Premium) and a free speaking test, while Fluently’s mock interview, English level test and conversation question generator work without the app.

Which English speaking app is totally free?

Neither ELSA Speak nor Fluently is totally free: both keep full practice behind a subscription after a free trial. For free practice with real people, ELSA’s own 2026 list of free apps suggests HelloTalk and Tandem, which both have free plans. For free practice alone, ELSA’s web test and Fluently’s browser mock interview cost nothing.

What is the best app to learn English speaking fluently?

No single app is best for everyone; the right one depends on what stops you. For clear pronunciation, ELSA Speak is the stronger tool. For fluent conversation, a conversation-first app such as Fluently gives you more speaking time. Our comparison of English speaking apps covers more options, including free ones.

Can I use ELSA Speak and Fluently together?

Yes. In an r/EnglishLearning thread from June 2026, several replies suggest splitting tools by skill: one app for pronunciation, separate practice for speaking. Both monthly plans together cost $44.98 a month on the US App Store ($19.99 for ELSA, $24.99 for Fluently, checked October 2026), so try the free parts first.
