How these The Night Agent quotes were checked
Every line was found word for word in subtitle transcripts of all 30 episodes. Subtitles sometimes shorten speech: in Season 1, Episode 5 the transcript has Dale saying “No one worries about the couple who follows them”, and IMDb adds “on the sidewalk”. IPA is US English from the Cambridge Dictionary. Spoilers start at the Diane Farr section.
Peter Sutherland quotes
Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) is a low-level FBI agent in the basement of the White House, “manning a phone that never rings”, until the night it does (Deadline, 2022). His lines are short and calm, so they are easy to copy.

|---|---|---|---|
| “No, doctor says I gotta do one good deed a day, for my health.” | S1, Ep. 1 “The Call” | The opening scene on a Washington Metro train: he gives a mother his seat. She says, “Someone raised you right.” | Gotta = got to, in speech only. Someone raised you right = your parents taught you good manners. |
| “I don’t have time to get you to trust me. But what I can tell you are my orders, which are to protect you with my life, and I will do that.” | S1, Ep. 1 | Rose wants a police station after the attack on her aunt and uncle. | Get someone to do something = make them do it. |
| “It’s miles above my pay grade.” | S1, Ep. 1 | He waits outside Rose’s debrief after being told the case is “miles above your pay grade”. | Above your pay grade = beyond your authority. Debrief /ˌdiːˈbriːf/. |
| “I’m not a traitor, all right? Neither was my father.” | S1, Ep. 1 | Rose asks why people think he was part of the Metro bombing. | Traitor /ˈtreɪ.t̬ɚ/. Neither was my father = my father wasn’t one either. |
| “I’m just a guy who answers the phone.” | S1, Ep. 4 “Eyes Only” | Meeting Lorna, an old friend of Rose’s aunt and uncle. | Flat, modest tone; stress GUY and PHONE. |
Rose Larkin quotes
Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) is a young tech CEO who calls the hotline when assassins come for her aunt and uncle (Variety, 2021). She does not trust easily, and her lines often end in a question.
| Quote | Episode | Scene | Learner notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| “I’m hoping it’s not you, and I don’t think it’s you. I have to trust someone, right?” | S1, Ep. 1 | Whispering to Peter: her aunt said someone in the White House could not be trusted. | She suspects a mole /moʊl/: someone inside who secretly works for the enemy. |
| “To stay alive as long as possible.” | S1, Ep. 2 “Redial” | Her answer when Peter asks, “What’s your plan here, Rose?” | Say as long as possible as one phrase: as-LONG-as-POSS-ible. |
| “You’re really on my side, aren’t you?” | S1, Ep. 2 | Peter replies: “How many times you want me to get shot at to prove it?” | On my side = supporting me. A falling tone on aren’t you means she is already sure. |
| “I thought I could read my way to Stanford.” | S1, Ep. 5 “The Marionette” | Stanford rejected her, so she went to a community college, then Berkeley, and later “hired a bunch of Stanford grads to grab me coffee.” | Read my way to = get there by reading. Grad = graduate. |
| “You’re not gonna forget about me, right?” | S1, Ep. 10 “Fathers” | Saying goodbye before Peter’s first mission. He answers: “I couldn’t if I tried.” | I couldn’t if I tried = it’s impossible. |
What is Night Action? Quotes about the phone line
In the show, Diane Farr describes Night Action as “a top-secret investigative program within the FBI” whose cases involve “matters of national security. Eyes only.” The phone Peter answers is “a secure emergency line in the basement of the White House” (S1, Ep. 3).
| Quote | Episode | Scene | Learner notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rose: “Night Action.” Peter: “Code, please.” Rose: “Pen. Clock. Door. Fire.” | S1, Ep. 1 | Rose’s first call, using the words her aunt and uncle gave her. | A code here is a secret phrase that proves who you are. |
| Peter: “Fight like hell, Rose, till we get there, okay?” | S1, Ep. 1 | An attacker is already inside the house. In Ep. 7 Rose repeats it back to him. | Like hell = as hard as you can (informal). Till = until. |
| Peter: “So you want me to be a night agent?” Farr: “God, no. Sorry. I want you to answer the phone for them.” | S1, Ep. 3 “The Zookeeper” | A flashback to the day Farr offers Peter the night desk. | God, no = absolutely not. Investigative /ɪnˈves.təˌɡeɪ.t̬ɪv/ is from the same scene. |
| President Travers: “What if I put you on the other end of that phone? … How would you like to be a night agent?” | S1, Ep. 10 | The finale: the President offers Peter a field job. | The other end of the phone = the caller, not the person answering. |
Diane Farr quotes (Season 1 spoilers)
Diane Farr (Hong Chau) is the President’s chief of staff and Peter’s boss (Deadline). Her lines read differently once you know her part in the conspiracy.
| Quote | Episode | Scene | Learner notes |

| “You pay your dues in Night Action, you put your time in in that hellhole of a room, manning a phone that never rings, and better things will come your way.” | S1, Ep. 1 | Reminding Peter of “our deal” when he wants a promotion. | Pay your dues = do the hard, boring work first. Man a phone = staff it. |
| “It’ll all be fine if you can just learn two words. No comment.” | S1, Ep. 1 | After Elliot Rome, whose “Rome Tome” spreads conspiracy theories, ambushes Peter in a viral video. | No comment = how officials refuse to answer a reporter. |
| “You don’t get to spill the milk and then pawn the cleanup off on me. That’s not how this works.” | S1, Ep. 6 “Fathoms” | To Vice President Redfield, who wants her to “handle this”. | You don’t get to = you have no right to. Pawn off on works like palm off: push an unwanted job onto someone. |
Secret Service quotes: Almora, Arrington and Monks
In the US, the Secret Service protects important politicians. Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola) heads the security detail (a team given one task) of the Vice President’s daughter; Erik Monks (D. B. Woodside) returns to the service after a long break (Deadline).
| Quote | Episode | Scene | Learner notes |

It’s… it’s ruled out.” | S1, Ep. 5 | The assassins Ellen (Eve Harlow) and Dale (Phoenix Raei) argue about keeping a baby. | Dale repeats rule out (decide it won’t happen) to end the talk. Down the road = in the future. |
